Once again, phone scammers are claiming to be members of Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office while targeting potential victims across Tulsa County. Over the past few days, TCSO and the Tulsa Police Department have received multiple calls from people who say they were targeted.
In the latest version of the scam, the caller tells people they have a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for a federal grand jury summons. They tell the person they must immediately pay hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in fines to avoid being arrested by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. They tell the would-be victim that they must pay the bond by purchasing cash cards, cash apps or crypto currency purchased at Bitcoin kiosks. In the latest version of the scam, the crook is using an app to spoof the non-emergency number for the Tulsa Police Department (918-596-9222). They even sent the potential victim a photo of a fake warrant with their name on it.
The scammers typically order the victim to remain on the phone with them while purchasing the cards, or crypto currency. As soon the victim provides the card numbers over the phone or send payment through an app, the money is stolen by the crook.
While these scammers can be convincing, we urge people to remember that TCSO will never call anyone with warrants to demand payment over the phone… and certainly not through the use of gifts cards, crypto currency or cash apps!
If you receive one of these calls, hang up. If you are a victim of this scam, call us at 918-596-5600 to file a report.
